The presentation speakers actually have two jobs to do, (i) address the public gathering and (ii) effectively present some information. Most of the times, the presentation speakers do only one of the tasks completely ignoring the other, as a result of which, the presentation fails to create the desired effect on the audience. Many exceptionally brilliant people in their field fail miserably when it comes to present their ideas, thoughts, findings to a larger audience. There are many ways to capture and maintain the interest of the audience. The scope of this article would not permit to describe each of them. Hence, I choose the one of the efficient and effective tools for the presentation speakers, HUMOR. Why is humor so effective in grabbing and maintaining the attention of the public? Humor is entertaining; it is entertainment. It is also the farthest thing away from the mind of the audience who has come for a presentation which is a serious and normally a no nonsense exercise. The presentation speakers who use humor hence act on two major factors, (i) surprise, (ii) pleasure. i. Surprise: The audience who has come prepared for a monotonous, though informative interaction or monologue will be surprised to find that they can enjoy the exercise. Because they enjoy what they hear, they will definitely pay close attention to all the details that you pile on them and your listeners will not only pay attention but also remember for a long time what you presented. ii. Pleasure: The audience who came prepared for a boring exercise, are offered a humorous presentation. If used effectively, the presentation would become a pleasure instead of a pain and you will have the opportunity of connecting with the audience effortlessly. This is because the presentation will give them pleasure. What humor can do for the presentation speakers?
Last but not the least, humor empowers the presentation speakers with a positive image in front of the audience, for which the task of presenting becomes easier. The positive image also helps in promoting the ideas voiced in the presentation as well as being remembered long after the presentation is over. It has actually been noted that those who can insert humor in their presentation, are usually the most sought after presentation speakers by both the company/ organization as well as the audience.
