A PEEK AT THIS NEW TOOL—PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT!
Performance:
According to the dictionary, “performance” refers to the manner or function of operating. It could also mean a recognized accomplishment. This definition has been taken literally by organizations who feel that they will achieve success only by making employees put in long hours of work and attend training sessions conducted from time to time, along with the usual planning, budgeting, sales and billings.
True, these are all the trappings associated with any business or services, but the reasons behind these have never been explored in detail. Therefore, the management is left wondering as to why the desired results have not come through as yet! Thus, a new concept called performance management has been introduced in recent years, to delve deeper into such areas and come up with viable solutions.
What is performance management?
This is a system devised to enable organizations achieve their desired goals via suitable strategies. The focus is on available resources and achievable targets. Unlike the thinking of yesteryears, where only employees were held responsible for the good performance or dismal performance of an institution, this new tool takes many other aspects into consideration too, such as—the organization itself; performances of the different departments (technical support, administration, sales, etc.) as well as individuals; varied management processes (finances, budgeting, billing, etc.); introduction of new policies and procedures; products or services offered; new projects; and team work.
Why is performance management imperative?
Considering the rapid economic growth and tough competition in today’s times, keeping its head above the water itself is a tough task! Additionally, the Internet has brought the world much closer. Even those who would never have dared to venture into this arena, have no hesitation in taking up business and trade!
Every organization has to therefore stay on its toes and constantly come up with great strategies to achieve quick and desired results. So, each member of the organization is required to pull up his/her socks and contribute his/her best to the company. Focus, strategies, and effectiveness have become key words for success. How does performance management help to improve an organization?
A hierarchical system still exists within organizations, and in all honesty, probably the organization would collapse without one, but today there is a striving to produce a more open and integrated environment, within which the employers, the working staff, suppliers and customers can all function in harmony without treading on each other’s toes.
Required information is readily passed on to all levels. The organizational members get a clear picture of the finances, and are able to involve themselves wholeheartedly in the budgeting and planning processes. Data collection also becomes an easy task. Since everyone is well informed, it becomes easy to plan out strategies within a certain monetary frame and time frame. Success cannot then be far off! And with computers so easily available, reporting of financial and operational data is more reliable.
Seeing that the management is on their side, the sales force becomes more motivated and performs better. Not only do workers deliver better, but so do decision-makers. Goal setting is a clearer horizon now.
There is also something called performance oversight practiced. This gives a picture of what has been overlooked regarding business performance.
How is performance improved?
An employee will improve his/her performance if he feels he is working in a stable environment. Delivery of services or products should be consistent. Is the company able to pay its bills and payments on time? Or is there an up and down swing regarding its finances?
How effective are all the programs that are being launched? Is sufficient research being done before doing so? No employee wants to be on the side of a loser!
How many people are willing to give sufficient resources to this particular institution because they feel it is blooming and growing? How much trust do they have in the company?
Where is performance management being used?
Today, it has become associated with the health sector, banking sector, risk management, supply chains, retail companies, the police department and even public sectors.
