Media training - effective communication
Media training is emerging as one of the most crucial factors in the promotional strategy of any organization/ business/ professional. There are too many examples around proving the importance of effective communication especially with the media.
The PR Department today is a highly specialized department whose main duty is to see that the image of the organization they work in is projected the way they want it to be projected to the larger public.
How is media training affecting the communication skills of the PR personnel?
In the past, a press conference meant that there would be a briefing about the company background, the issue they wanted to project, and then an open interaction period for clarification and comments. Besides this, there was no further communication by the company to the press. It was then expected that they ‘get the picture’ and put it across effectively.
However, this is not the case. The press tends to interpret the way they want it and that way is not always the “right” way from the point of view of the organization. Media training will teach you that to ensure that they do represent the facts correctly and in writing. Unless it is given in writing the press will represent what transpired in the meeting in their own style.
What does good media training say about effective communication & Presentation skills?
All the big names in the corporate sector have their PR personnel go through regular media training exercises, which teach effective communication skills not only within the organization but also outside the organization. Good communication skills will ensure:
- correct and consistent flow of information to the press
- project a cohesive picture of the organization’s core strengths and capabilities
- projects the right sales pitch, without using the usual sales hype
- that your organization can communicate with the public (consumers) through press
- a strategic positioning in the market through the press
Media training though is sounds simple, is a skill that is acquired over a long period of time. It requires patience, clarity of internal and external focus, sharp communication skills, quick reactions and meticulous planning.
In order to be successful with the press, the messaging should be done consistently with the overall goal and mission of the organization. The PR Department should be able to use the press as an effective channel for communication with the consumer, competitors and the market at large.
