Good management skills – what does it involve?

When you speak of management skills, what most people understand is the ability of solving problems. However, in the real sense of the phrase, ‘management skills’ means much more than this.  A good manager is not only required to solve problems; rather he/she is required to prevent problems.  The ability of being able to smell trouble ahead of time and the capacity of blocking it before it happens is actually what management skills are all about.

Reactive management VS preventive management skills

In the past, a manager was basically using reactive management skills to run the company. In other words, he/she acted after a situation arose.  The ability for making fast decisions to counteract any damage is still the best ability a manager has. If he/she is a good reactive manager he would be able to:

  • decide and act fast
  •  see the root of the problem, and act on it
  • use creative ways to exist sticky situations
  • innovate new ways to solve problems, and motivate people to accept it
  • keep calm in the face of crisis and control panic among the team
  • analyze, identify and cut losses quickly

Anyone who has the above skill set will have little trouble in keeping his/her organization on the path of success. However, this is not the whole thing. A good manager should be able to also predict trouble and to a large extent avert it.

What is ‘predictive management skills’?

We have seen above the meaning of ‘reactive management skills’. This is only half of the picture. A good predictive manager should be able to:

  • be highly analytical about market and internal situation
  • ‘see’ patterns in failure process and the data that led to it
  • keep the large picture in view vis-à-vis the problem that had occurred
  • be highly focused on the possible causes of failure within the organization and from outside the organization
  • Improve & boost your confidence with presentation skills training.

In order to be a good predictive manager, you will need to have the ability of analyzing past problems in great detail and applying that information to the present condition and style of working of the organization. With some practice you will be able to see the past problems patterns and be able to block their occurrence in the future.

The most important aspect here is, the ability to read the warning signals well in advance to avert the problem before it happens, thereby saving the organization a lot in resources and effort.

This is why predictive management skills are more in demand than reactive management skills.
